Bathroom remodel cost by tier

Our calculator starts from a per-square-foot range for each tier, then scales it by the parts of the bathroom you are changing. For a 50 square foot bathroom:

• Budget is a cosmetic refresh: new fixtures, paint, re-grouting or a new vanity, keeping the layout.
• Mid-range is a full remodel in the existing footprint with a new tub or shower, vanity, tile, and fixtures.
• High-end involves layout changes, custom tile work, and premium fixtures and finishes.

Why small bathrooms cost more per square foot

Many of the costs in a bathroom don't shrink with the room. A vanity, toilet, shower valve, waterproofing, and a plumber's visit cost about the same in a 35 square foot bathroom as in a 60 square foot one. Where the money goes

• Tub or shower. The largest single item in our estimate, since it includes the fixture or enclosure, waterproofing, and installation.
• Plumbing relocation. Moving the toilet, sink, or shower drain is one of the most expensive line items. Keeping fixtures where they are is the biggest way to save.

Ways to save

• Keep the toilet, sink, and shower where they are.
• Refinish or reglaze instead of replacing a sound tub, where appropriate.
• Pick a stock vanity and mid-priced tile, and splurge on one feature.
• Use standard-size tile and a simple layout to limit cuts and labor.
• Fix everything at once. Opening walls twice to do plumbing and tile separately costs more.

Plan for surprises

Bathrooms hide water damage. Behind old tile, tubs, and vanities, contractors often find rot, mold, or outdated plumbing. Keep a contingency of 10–20% of your estimate as a rule of thumb, and get two or three quotes based on the same written scope.
